A Study on identity crisis in the two main characters in Frank Chin's play: the chickencoop Chinaman

This thesis is a study on identity crisis in the two
main characters in Frank Chin's play The Chickencoop
Chinaman, The thesis writer is curious to find out how
the environment influences their identity formation, how
they are affected by their identity crisis and how each
of them handles the problem. The purpose of the thesis
is to analyze the influence of their environment in the
formation of their identity, the effect of their crisis
of identity on their action and to discuss the way each
character handles their problem. In analysing the topic,
the thesis writer uses the library research to find the
data, she uses literary approach and the psychological
theory on identity crisis. Tarn Lum and Lee's
environment, the ghetto where they were born and raised,
affect them to be American than Chinese. Tarn Lum chooses
to marry a white woman and denies his own father. Lee
always tries to make herself and other people believe
that she is a white woman. She also likes marrying with
men from different races. This condition brings Tarn Lum
to compromise with reality and Lee's new life as their
accepting toward themselves.
