The Flouting of conversational maxims by the main male characters in Wedding Crashers movie

In this study, the writer is to find out about the flouting of conversational maxims
included in the humorous conversations of the main male characters (Jeremy and
John) in the Wedding Crashers movie, and she also wants to find out which
maxim is mostly flouted. In analyzing the data, the writer uses Grice?s theory of
conversational maxims. The writer uses qualitative approach to describe the
flouting of conversational maxims by the main male character in Wedding
Crashers movie. She puts the flouted maxim and the context of the humor in the
table in order to make it easier to identify the type of maxims and to find out the
mostly flouted maxims. In the findings, the writer found out that the Maxim of
Quality, Maxim of Relevance, and Maxim of Manner were flouted in the
humorous conversations in Wedding Crashers movie. Besides, it was found out
that the Maxim of Quality was flouted the most by t he main male characters, John
and Jeremy. It shows that the characters are telling lies, denying something and
also containing sarcastic in the humorous conversations. Lastly, in this study,
there is no Maxim of Quantity flouted in this film, since It is because there are no
uninformative words or using too many words to express their mind.
