The Significance of higgs' faith in Samuel Butler's erewhon and erewhon revisited

Butler's Erewhon and Erewhon Revisited is about the
success of the main character,Higgs,to tell the truth.
In doing the analysis, the thesis writer uses two liter -
ary devices,namely characterization and conflict.This
thesis will analyze how Higgs'faith influences his
character traits and how Higgs'faith makes him able to
overcome his inner conflict.Higgs is considered as a
brave man because he dares to visit the forbidden land
Erewhon. As he learns that Erewhonians'religion is
wrong as seen through his Christian point of view,he
attempts to correct the religion.Erewhonian people
worship gods.Although his position is only a stranger,
Higgs is brave and persistent to learn the Erewhonian
religion in order to be able to convert the people into
Christianity.Yet,he does not succeed so that he revis -
its Erewhon. He finds that the Erewhonian people have
got a new religion, called Sunchildism,in which he is
worshipped.Since Higgs realizes that he is just an
ordinary human being,he has an inner conflict whether to
tell the truth or not.If he tells the truth,he might
be killed. On the other hand,he will go home safely if
he keeps silent.Higgs'faith,however,motivates him to
tell the truth at last. His visit and revisit indicate
how his faith influences his life.
