A Study of reward and punishment in Charles Dickens' Nicholas Nichleby

The thesis writer studies the reward and
punishment in Nicholas Nickleby because Charles Dickens
is a remarkable novelist whose writings are mostly about
justice for everyone. This study is about Charles
Dickens idea of reward and punishment that becomes a
major theme in most of Dickens novels. The thesis
writer, therefore,is curious to know how the theme of
reward and punishment is reflected through the
characters in Charles Dickens novel Nicholas Nickleby .
The analysis shows that at the beginning of the novel,
Ralph stands for evil;Nicholas and Kate stand for good.
Ralph does the bad ways to Nicholas,Kate, and his clerk
in order to get many advantages. However,Nicholas and
Kate are always good to Ralph and his son, their mother,
and everybody. From the analysis, the thesis writer
concludes that Ralph who is evil to his nephew, niece,
and clerk gets punishment.Ralph commits suicide by
hanging himself. He punishes himself. On the other
hand,Nicholas and Kate Nickleby who are helpful, kind
and compassionate to everybody,get reward.Nicholas
marries a rich woman and Kate marries a rich man. They
live happily ever after.
