Word formation processes on the youth registers of maxim and Elle Magazines

When people talk to others who have the same jobs, environment, or activities, they will use the same register. Register can be described as the language of groups of people with common interests or jobs, or the language used in situations associated with such groups. Thus, when young people talk to young people, they tend to use the same register which is called youth register. This is a study focusing on finding out the word formation processesin the youth register used by the reader?s letters from five edition of Maxim and Elle magazine. This research based was on George Yule?s (1997) theory on word formation. The main distinguish that differentiate between men and women are the topic of language they used, women tend to use fashion, trend, and the others to create a conversation with the same gender. While man tend to use sport to create a conversation with the same gender. The result of the study indicates that word formation process is that occurred in these two magazines are borrowing, compounding, multiple process, derivations, and acronyms. Among all the word formation process, borrowing is the most often used processes. Women tend to use standard variation of language, which is Indonesia. While men tend to use a lot of variations word formation from English and the other.
