The Motivation of social science and science students in learning English

This is a quantitative study on students’ motivation in learning English by seeing the correlation between students’ background of study with their level of motivation. The data was collected from 100 students in Faculty of Economy and 100 students from Faculty of Industrial Technology in Petra Christian University by distributing the questionnaires. Faculty of Economy represents Social Science background while Faculty of Industrial Technology represents Science background. The theory used in this study is the Socio-Educational Model by Gardner (2005). The study showed that there was no significant difference between Social Science and Science students in their motivation to learn English. In conclusion, background of study does not have a significant role in determining students’ motivation.
