Yet, the real theme, which is going to be analyzed deal with the change of character traits of Dorian Gray, a strikingly handsome young man from an innocent nature into an evilly selfish person. Dorian Gray is innocent in the sense that he is still unaware of good and evil knowledge. His meeting with Lord Henry brought him to realize that he can use his good looks to influence and charm people. Hence, he changes to a different person as seen in his attitude of showing-off and selfishness. In order to find and prove them the writer will analyze the changes of character traits by using the literary approach, namely the theories of characterization as well as the theory of conflict. The writer uses theory of characterization in order to prove that Dorian Gray has an innocent or good character traits and selfish character after his change through his speech, thought and attitude toward the other characters, and also what other characters say about him. Theory of conflict is used to show the process of struggling against a force inside the character, which result in the changes of character traits from an innocent to selfish one that makes him able to murder and cause the death of other characters. Beside literary approach, the writer will use psychology theory to analyze the motivation or the possible cause of the change of character trait as reflected in his attitude toward other characters. The psychology theory used in this thesis is Narcissistic Personality Disorder that later on in the analysis proves to be a complete and scientific theory to be used to analyze the character traits and attitudes after the change. The thesis writer finds out that Dorian?s attitude after the change such as his selfishness and show-off are actually caused by Narcissistic personality Disorder.
