Accordingly, this thesis discusses how the same backgrounds influence the main characters to have different philosophy of life that cause the same result on their present. She managed to prove that Victor?s and Walter?s present is influenced by their philosophy of life which is shaped by the background in which they lived. To analyse the problems above, she made use of some literary theories, namely setting, character, and plot as the main theories, and also some psychology theories such as theory of failure, motivation and happiness as the supporting theories. As the finding, the thesis writer sees that there are social and family backgrounds which directly affected Victor and Walter to hold such philosophy of life. She also finds out that despite their success, both main characters are not happy with their accomplishment. Their failure in present is seen through their being frustrated and pessimistic in facing the future. Besides, the thesis writer sees that what philosophy of life one believes is right; it only depends on how one applies it in life.
