envelope the female main character Clara Hopgood. She believes that from these
rules, the author of the novel tries to deliver a message containing the concept of
ideal women from the author?s point of view; in terms of education, marriage and
religion. Therefore, the topic of this research is the study of Clara Hopgood?s
concept of ideal women. From this study, the thesis writer tries to find out Clara
Hopgood?s concept of ideal women, the reasons and the effects of having the
concept. The purpose of this study is to answer these problems. This research is
library research and the approach the thesis writer uses to answer the problem is
Cultural studies with the concept of feminism, Victorian Ideal Women and
idealism. From analyzing the novel, the thesis writer can conclude that Clara
Hopgood succeeds to become an ideal woman according to the concepts that she
believes. She is independent, smart and courageous. Clara steps asides rules that
envelopes her life and dares to follow what she believes although it is different
from common people?s belief.
