because he is a great Irish literary figure, playwright, novelist and poet in modern
times and concerned with human sufferings and survival stemming from the pressure
of the condition in their life like in Happy Days. Happy Days is an absurd play
consisting of two acts only and originally was written in English, and then later
translated into French Oh! les beaux jours in 1961. Reading this play, Happy Days,
the thesis writer is interested in analyzing, how absurdity is expressed through the
main characters in this play. In analyzing this play, the thesis writer applies the
literary approach and uses some literary theories and supporting concept. The literary
theories include characterization and setting, and the Theatre of the Absurd as the
supporting concept. There are only two characters, Winnie and Willie in an absurd
setting of place. With those theories and concept, the thesis writer is able to conduct
the analysis and find out the answer to her statement of the problem. Finally, at the
end of this analysis it can be concluded that the absurdity can be seen in Winnie and
Willie?s behavior, thoughts and speeches in the whole play and all of them are
absurd.
