The representation of masculinity in Indonesian comic strip Tahilalats

Comic strip such as Tahilalats has been used as the visual representation which implies messages towards its audience. Tahilalats uses humor of masculinity as entertainment. However, humor contains ideology which are socially constructed. Tahilalats shows the concept of masculinity that implies ideology such as patriarchal ideology and heterosexism in its stories through the characters’ interactions and the body images of the characters. This study reveals that masculinity is represented by some aspects, such as male’s gender identity, gender role and sexual orientation. This study analyzes how masculinity is related to male’s gender identity through physical attributes and behaviors, gender roles through male’s role in patriarchal society and sexual orientation of heterosexual male. Thus, it also shows how Indonesian society uses humor as the weapon towards men who cannot be categorized as masculine. Finally, this study reveals Tahilalats as a comic strip which is ideological as it contains gender ideology in Indonesia.
