A Study of excessive thirst for honor in Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman's The Man Who Came to Dinner

The thesis writer studies the character traits of Sheridan Whiteside in The Man
Who Came to Dinner, which is written by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman. This study
is aimed at understanding the life of the main character, Sheridan Whiteside who is
pretending to be paralyzed. The writer of the thesis is challenged to analyze the character
traits of Sheridan Whiteside in this drama to find out the reason why Sheridan Whiteside
is pretending to be paralyzed and the effects of his pretending. By using theory of
characterization, the theory of conflict and supporting concept, the thesis writer
concludes that Sheridan Whiteside is a person who is excessive thirst for honor based on
his character traits: Sheridan Whiteside?s deceit, manipulate and arbitrary. Furthermore,
by studying the character in this drama, the thesis writer finds a lesson that what people
say and do can be deceiving. It means that what people say and do are not always the
same as their inner qualities.
