Library's collection Library's IT development CancelIn this study, the writer investigated the types of conversational maxims flouted by Detective Clouseau, the main character in Pink Panther movie. Then, the writer investigated the implied meaning behind the flouted maxims. The main theory used was based on Grice?s (1975) theory. The writer also used the theory of context by Hymes (1964). To support the main theory, the writer also used the theories proposed by Brown and Yule (1983), Thomas (1995), Yule (1996), and Cutting (2002). In her study, the writer used descriptive approach. The writer read the script of the movie to find out the flouted maxims and the implied meanings. The result of the analysis showed that detective Clouseau often flouted maxim of quantity by giving too much or too little information. The writer found that Clouseau often flouted maxim of relation by giving irrelevant information in order restrain his addressees from uttering something important because he wanted to make sure that the room was secure first. The writer also found that detective Clouseau often flouted maxim of quality by using metaphor in order to compare something. Furthermore, the writer found that Clouseau seldom flouted maxim of manner in this movie. He flouted maxim of manner once. He was being unclear in explaining how long he would find the murderer when a reporter asked him.
