A Study on the main character, Amy Dorrit, as the reflection of the Victorian "Angel of the house" in Charles Dickens' Little Dorrit

Charles Dickens (1812-1870) is one of the greatest English novelists in
the Victorian Era. His works generally concerns with the social life of the
lower class society that is filled with many difficulties and injustice caused by
the great gap between the rich and the poor during that period of time. One of
Dickens? novel that draws the thesis writer?s interest is Little Dorrit, the story
of a poor girl who devotes herself as an angel of the house for her family in
the middle of life?s hardship. In this thesis, the thesis writer?s topic is Amy
Dorrit?s character traits that match the characteristics of an angel of the
house, which is the ideal Victorian feminine figure. In analyzing Amy
Dorrit?s character, the thesis writer uses the literary approach and applies the
theory of characterization and the concept of the angel of the house. The
thesis writer finds out that Amy Dorrit fulfills the characteristics of an angel
of the house, which are: virtuous, pious, pure, innocent, and devoted to
domesticity
