equal rights as seen through his conflicts in James Baldwin, Tell Me How Long the
Train's Been Gone. This thesis will analyze the main character who faces problems
when he attempts to break the gap between the blacks and the whites. James
Baldwin's character in this novel experiences various obstacles while he struggles
for is rights. The outer and the inner conflicts will show how hard the main
character has to struggle in the racist community in order to get equal rights. The
main character has conflicts with his family, racist community, his lover, Barbara
and his director, Mr. Saul Marquands. Then, from the analysis above, the thesis
writer concludes that people should have willingness and spirit to struggle against
injustices in life, moreover they have to do their best to face all the problem in life.
