Study on Martha's character traits and inner conflict concerning her pregnancy as seen in McCarthy's a Charmed Life

A Charmed Life is the title of Mary McCarthy's third
novel which portrays the inner conflict of the main
character, Martha, dealing with her pregnancy. The thesis
concerns with the life of the main character who faces inner
conflict dealing with her pregnancy whose paternity is in
doubt. The thesis writer is eager to know what kinds of
character traits influence Martha's inner conflict that
leads her come to a decision to have an abortion. The thesis
writer uses the theory of conflict and characterization seen
from the literary point of view to analyze the matter. In
the analysis, she discusses how Martha's character traits,
that are caring about the truth, loyal, obedient, and
immature lead her come to a decision of having an abortion.
In the conclusion, she finds out that those character traits
give strong influence for the main character, Martha, to
decide to have an abortion.
