The Refusal strategies used by male and female prospective customers in refusing insurance offers

This study observed the refusal strategies used by male and female in refusing insurance offer. It focused on the comparison how these two gender employed the refusal strategies in insurance offers. The data were taken from the recorded dialog of 10 male prospective customers and 10 female prospective customers. Then, the data were analyzed by using Refusal strategies by Kartomihardjo (1993) and men?s and women?s language by Coates (2004) and Kuntjara (2004). The findings show that the male prospective customers were likely to have using the word "No" as their refusal; meanwhile, the female prospective customers were likely to gave reason as their refusal. Thus, there are some differences and similarities. The first difference is male prospective customers applied 5 strategies while female prospective customers only applied 4 strategies. Second, male prospective customers applied using condition as one of his refusals while female prospective customers did not. The similarities are both of male and female prospective customers did not perform the word "Thank you" and the less frequently strategy used, was giving suggestion. While, male prospectives customers refused the insurance offer more directly whilst female prospective customers refused indirectly.
