Library's collection Library's IT development CancelIn this study, the writer investigated the types of code used by a staffer working in an automotive company when she talks to the other staff and bosses. In addition, the similarity and differences in the use of code expressed by the staffer were also examined. The theory of code, social status, and standard and non standard code by Wardhaugh (2006), Muysken (2000), Holmes (2001), (Tampubolon, 1978), Kridalaksana (1975) and Riasa (2002) were used. For collecting and analyzing the data, the writer used qualitative approach supported by quantitative data. She recorded the conversations occurred between a staffer of a car dealership and her colleagues and between her and the bosses. The data collection was done from 6 to 11 February 2011 for two hours per day. Then she analyzed the conversations to find out the answers of her research questions. The result of the analysis showed that when she communicated with other staff, the staffer observed used standard Indonesian code (64.72 %), non-standard Indonesian code (32.10%) and English code (3.18%), while when she talked to her bosses, she used standard Indonesian code (76.12 %), non-standard Indonesian code (18.44 %) and English code (5.44 %). This study showed that social status might give more influences to the code election.
