The writer used the study of Ervin-Tripp (1976) as cited in Wolfson (1981) as the reference of types of directives. Besides, the study of Yule (1996) was used as a reference to reveal the kinds of responses used by Andrea. In addition, the writer used the theory of Adler, Proctor II, and Towne (2005) as a reference to reveal the verbal or nonverbal communication. The writer used qualitative approach in conducting this study. The writer found only three types of directives that were used by the boss to Andrea which are bald imperatives, need statement, and hints. In contrast, the assistant only produced bald imperatives and hints. Bald imperatives is the most frequent type used by both the boss and the assistant. Also, the writer found that Andrea used more nonverbal responses to the boss while she used more verbal responses toward the assistant.
