The Characteristics of innovative construction project: a study in Thailand construction industry

Construction is recognized as the main pillar of the national economy, though the
productivity in construction industry is low compared to others industry. Despite some
construction projects have been implementing automation and others innovation, the
diffusion is not widely spread away, especially in developing countries, which most of
construction project stuck in craft method. This study was based on quantitative research
through questionnaire and conducted to identify the innovation’s enablers and barriers, and
what innovations were occurred in Thailand construction project, moreover this research
also identify the characteristics of innovative project
The result showed that 37.5% of innovation in Thailand was material with supplier as main
source of innovation, followed by IT, equipment, construction method, and contract
respectively. The reluctance to change found as the biggest barrier, and owner’s demand of
cost effectiveness as the biggest enabler.
The other result found that collaboration and teamwork based climate with support and
sufficient resources from top management were the characteristics of innovative project.
The trust among project team members found did not affect project rate of innovation.
Furthermore innovative project were characterized by high level of IT, intense
communication, risk management, and value engineering, and lastly many changes in
scope of works.
