copes with them in William Faulkner?s Intruder in the Dust. This topic interests
the writer since it involves an issue which always exists in the history of the
humankind, that is, racial problem. The writer uses literary approach, that is, the
theory of characterization and the theory of conflict to analyze racial problems
that happens to Lucas. In addition, the writer also uses sociological concepts
concerning race, especially white and black people. The writer of this thesis
discusses two things that are divided into several parts. First, Lucas Beauchamp?s
racial problems that are divided into two parts which are self-denial as a black
person and racial prejudice from white society. Second, the ways Lucas
Beauchamp copes with his problems that are divided into two parts: being realistic
and being a peacekeeping person. In analyzing the topic, the writer knows that
the racial problems, the problem it depicts are not solved by improving or even
merely enforcing laws, but by changing people?s moral presupposition, way of
thinking, in short their heart. The writer of this thesis concludes that the Black
could have the equal rights as the White, if the Black are willing to do some
effort.
