In a conversation, there is always turn taking. It means that there is always a shift of speakers. Chatting is one of the types of conversations in informal situation, which is used a lot of turn taking. This study analyzed the turn taking strategy, which is mostly used by females at the boarding house and how the mechanism of that strategy was used. Besides, it also analyzed on the dominant speakers in chatting and the reasons why they used that strategy. The data were obtained through recording the subjects at the boarding house while they were chatting for a half-hour. The data then were analyzed by classifying the turn taking strategy according to Stenstorm (1994). The findings show that the females mostly used Taking Over. The next strategy, which occurred, was Starting Up, while Interrupting occurred the least. The findings also show that there were three dominant speakers who dominated in the conversation.
