A Study on communication strategies used by English learners of the conversation 4 class at language education program Petra Christian University

The Thesis is about the Communication Strategies used by English
learners of Conversation 4 Class at Language Education Program, Petra Christian
University. Descriptive qualitative was the research method used by the writer to
conduct the research. The types of Communication Strategies used by the
students, and reasons of using the strategies were analyzed based on the theory of
Communication Strategies by William Littlewood. An observation was conducted
upon the students in a classroom in the entire sentences produced by the students
were recorded. The data of Communication Strategies were analyzed based on the
typed and the characteristics of Communication Strategies. The result of this study
concluded that the students generally adjusted their message in overcoming gap of
linguistic repertoire in communication using foreign language, in this case is the
English Language. The students? reason of using Communication Strategies was
generally because they lacked of English vocabulary and hesitated of using the
term they wanted to produce.
