Stevenson's The Master of Ballantrae. They are the two brothers James and
Henry Durrie of the House of Durrisdeer, two of the characters in the novel
The Master of Ballantrae. Using the theory of characterization and the
theory of love and hatred, the thesis writer analyzes the love and hatred, the
thesis writer analyzes the love and hatred which exist in the two brothers
who at first have very different character traits. The first son, James,
represents evil and the second son, Henry, represents virtue. But both hate
each other so much that virtue develops into evil in hating the other. It
happens when James, who is supposed to be dead, envies Henry, who
inherits the title, wealth, and marries James' lover, Alison. Later Henry
becomes as evil as James, and both try to defeat each other due to their
hatred Finally, both of them cannot reach their dreams but they meet their
tragic death. Through the discussion, the thesis writer learns that
brotherhood is much more important in life compared to wealth and power.
Through a loving brotherhood, people can have a peaceful life.
