This thesis is a study of Song of Solomon and the value
of the African heritage for the African-Americans'life as
reflected in Toni Morrison's Song of Solomon.This novel is
used to awaken the African-Americans from materialism.The
writer of this thesis is interested in analyzing how Toni
Morrison uses Song of Solomon to awaken the African-Ameri -
cans from American Dream of materialism.The literary
approach that the writer uses to answer the problem as
stated in the statement of the problem are
characterization and conflict.She is going to analyze
Macon Dead,Pilate,Milkman and Milkman's inner conflict in
order to prove that Morrison uses Song of Solomon to awaken
the African-Americans from the American dream of material -
ism.Through this analysis,the readers can understand more
about the relationship of the American Dream of materialism
and the African heritage which is the oral tradition and
realize that happiness is not always gained by having much
money and/or being successful.
