what someone says or expresses his or her gratitude. From this factor, the writer is
interested to know what types of thanking strategies which Chinese Indonesian
male and female students as the speakers choose to express the gratitude
expressions when they receive the act of kindness (receiving a favor, getting a
compliment and getting a suggestion) from their peers. The data of this study are
taken from the structured interview distributed to forty respondents which consist
of twenty Chinese Indonesian male students and twenty Chinese Indonesian
female students of the Faculty of Art and Design in Petra Christian University.
The data got are analyzed based on the eight strategies of thanking proposed by
Haverkate (1984). From the data analysis, the writer finds out that strategy 7,
expressing emotion is the strategy mostly used by both Chinese Indonesian male
and female students. Another two strategies mostly used by the students are
strategy 1, thanking somebody explicitly and strategy 4, expressing appreciation
of the act. Moreover, both of male and female rarely use strategy 5
(acknowledging a debt of gratitude) and strategy 2 (expressing gratitude) which
males do not use this strategy at all.
